The Massachusetts State Health Deparment mandates that all public and semi-public beaches be tested for the indicator organism Escherichia coli (E. coli) once per week during the summer season. The allowable limit for bacteria colony forming units (cfu) per 100ml water sample is 235. If the test samples exceed that number, Tri-Town Health and the Town of Stockbridge will close the beach until new tests indicate that the bacteria population has dropped below the limit.
