The Tax Collector's office is responsible for the collection of all taxes and charges as levied or assessed by the proper authorities. The primary concern is safeguarding and accounting of all public funds. As an individual contributor, the incumbent must proceed diligently with the collection process while establishing and maintaining good public relations with the residents of town. Collection Process Real Estate, Personal Property, Excise Tax and Water / Sewer Warrants are committed to the Tax Collector from the Assessors and Water / Sewer Commissioners. A Commitment Book and bills are prepared by computer and the bills sent to all assessed. Payments are either made in person by the Taxpayer at the Tax Office, or received by mail. Receipts and bills are reconciled and are deposited at the bank on a daily basis. All bills are due 30 days after mailing. After that time, interest is calculated on unpaid bills and a Demand statement is sent. If the bill is still unpaid within 14 additional days, appropriate action is taken to facilitate collection (i.e. Final letters of Warrants sent, or in the case of Real Estate, the process of Tax Title may be initiated). Municipal Lien Certificates are prepared on request from attorneys. A fee is paid to the Town of Stockbridge for this service. These certificates verify the status of tax and/or utility amounts due, and are then recorded by the attorney at the Registry on Deeds. The Town Collector is responsible for the billing and collection of all municipal taxes (real estate, personal property and excise). In addition, this department is responsible for the billing and collection of the water and sewer, compactor and waste treatment charges.
